Energy, strength, self-confidence and joy come across to the viewer on Eva Hoppert’s large-format, intensely coloured canvases. The artist paints with great gesture and a firm, dominant brushstroke that alternates between fields of colour, relief-like application of paint and a graphic mesh of lines, ultimately conjuring up a coherent overall composition.
The interplay of colours in her painting always creates new moods, sometimes spring-like, summery light, sometimes flowery and rich, sometimes like a threatening thunderstorm or abysmal, deep water. Her painting becomes an expression of her emotional world, from colourful and naturalistic to dark and graphic. The lines that cover the canvas in quick sketchy strokes become the all-connecting element.
Escaping from the daily grind, she finds peace and balance in her art, in which an awareness of herself takes place. Capturing the moment is an emblematic title for her conception of painting. She translates impressions directly and spontaneously onto the canvas. In the works, one senses that the artist overrides inner barriers or reservations. An uninhibited, energetic gesture is the main feature of her cheerful pictorial worlds, in which she tirelessly searches for new forms, for paradise, for colour. She herself describes her painting as “a journey into life”, colourful and fresh, the sad does not exist: “I don’t want to be a do-gooder, I want to create joy!”
